The Spirit of “Merah Putih” in Photography

After 350 years under the rules of the Dutch, and 3,5 years under the rules of the Japanese, on August 17th, 1945, The Independence Day of Indonesia was officially proclaimed. With this declaration started the five year diplomatic and armed-resistance of the Indonesian National Revolution, fighting against the Netherlands until they officially acknowledged Indonesia’s independence in 1949.
At that same day The national flag of Indonesia, which is known as Sang Saka Merah Putih (“The Red and White”) was introduced and hoisted in public at the Indonesian Independence Day ceremony. The design of the flag has remained the same ever since.

The red stands for courage, while the white stands for purity. The red represents human’s body or physical life, while white represents human’s soul or spiritual life. Together they stand for a complete human being
